Project:
Virginia State Capitol Building
Location: Richmond, Virginia
Facility End Use: Capitol Building
Completion Date: May 2007
Follansbee Product: TCS II®
In 2003, the Virginia General Assembly decided to renovate, restore and expand the Virginia Capitol building in Richmond, VA. Their objective was to maintain the essence of Thomas Jefferson’s original design while improving the quality and durability of the structure.
As part of the renovation efforts, Follansbee TCS II terne-coated stainless steel was selected as the modern replacement for the structure’s antiquated roof, preserving the building’s traditional visual appeal. Approximately 22,000 square feet of TCS II was installed as a batten seam roof.
In addition to the roof, the facility’s plumbing, heating, air conditioning, electrical and storm water drainage distribution systems were all replaced. On the interior, deteriorating wall paintings and floor coverings were restored. Outside, the damaged brick foundation was refurbished, while a new 25,000 square-foot underground wing was added. The expansion provides a visitor's entrance that is ADA compliant, as well as office space, meeting rooms and better security management.
TCS II is an architectural stainless steel coated with Follansbee’s patented ZT® (zinc/tin) alloy. Having withstood over 30, 250 hours of ASTM salt spray testing with no signs of failure, TSC II proves a perfect choice for structures in industrial, coastal, and salt-water environments. The terne-coated roof requires no painting, but instead weathers naturally to an attractive gray patina. TCS II is solderable and virtually maintenance-free.
